Barguna District (BARISAL division) a coastal district, with an area of 1831.31 sq km, is bounded on the north by JHALOKATI, BARISAL, PIROJPUR and PATUAKHALI districts, on the east by Patuakhali district, on the south byPatuakhali, the BAY OF BENGAL, on the west by PIROJPUR and BAGERHATdistricts. Noted rivers are Payra, BISHKHALI and Baleshwar.
Average annual temperature: maximum33.3°C and minimum 12.1°C; annual rainfall 2506 mm (1997). Coordinates: 22.1508° N 90.1264° E Barguna (Town) consists of 9 wards and 18 mahallas with an area of 15.57 sq km. The town has a population of26484; male 53.89%, female 46.11%. Barguna municipality was established in 1973. The literacy rate among the town people is 56.6%. The town has three dakbungalows. |

During the British rule, a police station was set up at Barguna in the 18th century. It was a part of the greater Barisal District at that time.
Later, during the end of the Pakistani period, it was elevated to a sub-division in 1969. In 1984, it was upgraded to a full district. |
